CHAPTER 1 OVERVIEW AND BASIC CASE STUDYSince the introduction of “Moneyball” in major league baseball, sports analytics has become an
important component of managing sports teams. For this exercise, you will assess the riskiness (in
terms of winning percentage) of two sports teams of your choice. This type of riskiness is a
function of the variance in the winning percentages. Teams with a consistently high winning
percentage or consistently low winning percentage, for example, would be assess as “lower risk”
while those whose winning percentages varied over the seasons would be “higher risk.” Risk level in
terms of winning percentage does not imply whether the team is succesful or not – it just measures
the variation in the winning percentages.
Compare and contrast the winning percentages of two sports teams of your choice, in the same
league (for example, NBA, NFL, NCAA, etc.). Download their winning percentages for the last ten
years, and assess the riskiness of each team in terms of winning percentage. Compute each’s sample
standard deviation, mean, and median, and accurately sketch two box and whiskers diagrams – one
for each team’s winning percentages — and ensure that they are scaled so they can be accurately
compared. Be sure to show all data and calculations. Be sure that your analytics can be easily
understood by another analytics person.
Record the data and perform the calculations using Excel. On a separate sheet of paper, sketch a
box and whiskers diagram for the range of each’s values. Write an essay (using a word processor) of
about one page (single spaced) with your opinions as to what the analytics are portraying. Turn in
the Excel file, the sketch, and Word file to the instructor through Canvas.

The purpose of these case studies is to demonstrate your ability to develop relatively routine
presentation graphics for analytical studies. You may refer to Chapter 2-R as needed, or to any
other source. Prepare these as if you were an entry level analytics analyst for an organization, and
are going to present these to a staff meeting of middle managers.
Choose any US professional football team division, and prepare a presentation graphic showing the
relative numbers of wins of each team. Use Excel for building the graph, and ensure that the graph
is presentation quality for an organizational staff meeting.
