STAT100 Fall 2019 Minitab Assignment 2: Exploratory Data Analysis 2
You need to submit a Word document or PDF for this assignment. Make sure you do the following:
1. Include your name in the document in the upper left-hand corner. Under your name, write
STAT 100 and your section number.
2. Write MINITAB Assignment 2 centered on the page.
3. Number and letter your answers to the questions accordingly.
4. Copy and paste into your document all relevant output generated in Minitab.
5. Use complete and coherent sentences to answer the questions.
6. Upload the assignment to ELMS before the deadline of Sunday 9/22 at 11:59 PM otherwise it
is considered late. Please use “your name_MINITAB_2” as the file name. Make sure you save
your document on your computer or email it to yourself so that you keep an electronic copy.
In this assignment there are 2 questions worth 25 points. Read each question carefully and follow all
directions. For this assignment you need to use the PulseRates data file, containing data collected
from 91 undergraduate students. See the data description file for more information on this data set.
1. (15 points) Open the PulseRates data file. For the resting pulse rate (Pulse1) variable, generate
one histogram for each of three groups: all students, students who smoke regularly, and
students who do not smoke regularly. For each group, generate one histogram for the resting
pulse rate (Pulse1) variable using the default bin/interval settings with bins created
automatically. Be sure to use descriptive titles and labels for your histograms; in the title or
subtitle, be sure to indicate which group (all students, smokers, or non-smokers) is
represented. Paste the 3 histograms into your document.
a.
Questions about the distribution of resting pulse rate for all students. See below a
histogram created for all students but with the number of bins restricted to 7 bins.

Resting Pulse Rate
i. Describe any differences between the histogram you created with the default bins and
the histogram above with only 7 bins showing the distribution of the resting pulse rate
variable for all students. Focus on the shape, center, spread and any outliers in the
distributions.
ii. Based on the histogram with 7 bins for all students, within which interval does the
median resting pulse rate fall?
b.
Questions about the distribution of resting pulse rate for students who smoke regularly.

bins restricted to 7 bins. Answer the questions below the histogram.

ii. Based on the histogram with 7 bins for students who do not smoke regularly, within

d.
Explain how you determine, in general, the interval of a histogram within which the
median falls.
2. (10 points) For the resting pulse rate (Pulse1) variable, generate descriptive statistics for each
of three groups: all students, students who smoke regularly, and students who do not smoke
regularly. Use the Descriptive Statistics command in Minitab to obtain the minimum value,
maximum value, mean, median, standard deviation, and inter-quartile range (IQR) for each
group. Paste the output in your document and be sure to indicate the group for each set of
descriptive statistics.
a. Questions about resting pulse rate for all statistics students:
i. Provide the median resting pulse rate for all students, rounded to two decimal places.
Does this median value fall within the interval you answered for question 2. a.?
ii. Provide the mean resting pulse rate for all students, rounded to two decimal places.
b. Questions about resting pulse rate for students who smoke regularly:
i. Provide the median resting pulse rate for smokers, rounded to two decimal places. Does
this median value fall within the interval you answered for question 2. b.?
ii. Provide the mean resting pulse rate for smokers, rounded to two decimal places.
c. Questions about resting pulse rate for students who do not smoke regularly:
i. Provide the median resting pulse rate for non-smokers, rounded to two decimal places.
Does this median value fall within the interval you answered for question 2. c.?
ii. Provide the mean resting pulse rate for non-smokers, rounded to two decimal places.
d. For which group (all students, students who smoke regularly, and students who do not
smoke regularly) is the difference between the mean and the median the greatest? Does
this make sense? Explain why or why not.
Pulse rates data
A medical researcher wants to study the effects of various factors on pulse rates. The researcher
records the height, weight, gender, smoking preference, activity level, and resting pulse rate of
91 undergraduate students. The researcher then randomly divides the students into two groups.
The first group runs in place for a minute while the other group stands still. Then, the researcher
records the students’ pulse rates again.
