Unit 2 AssignmentThe Uniform Crime Report (UCR), compiling by the FBI, is the best known and most widely
cited source of aggregate crime data. Students should find out the information about “violent
crime” known to police and “population” in Houston during 2006-2015 when you visit FBI
website ( https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/ucr/publications). Once you are in this website, let’s take
the year 2012 as an example, do following works:
1. Click “2012” under “Crime in the United States”
2. Click “Violent Crime” in the box “Offenses
Known to Law Enforcement”
3. Click “Table 8” under the column “Data Tables”
4. Scroll down and click “Texas.” In this table, all
cities in Texas are arranged in alphabet order.
5. Go to Houston. The information in the second
column (next to Houston) is population of
Houston in 2012 (2,177,213; write it down; you
need it to calculate violent crime rates in 2012).
The information next to population is “violent
crime” (21,610; write it down; you need it to
calculate violent crime rates in 2012).
6. Now you should have all necessary information to
calculate violent crime rate of Houston in 2012.
Take following calculations as an example:
Crime Rate Per 100,000 population = (# of reported crimes/total population of a specific
jurisdiction) x 100,000
2012 Violent Crime Rates of Houston = (21,610/2,177,273) x 100,000 = 0.00992526 x
100,000 = 992.5259717 = 992.5 (rounding to the nearest tenth) per 100,000 population
7. Go back to Step 1 “Crime in the United States.” You should
see UCR from 1995 to 2019. Click each year and repeat the
steps 2-6 to calculate violent crime rates from 2006-2015 (the
data set of 2016 changes the unit from city to county).
Note, “per 100,000 population” is the
unit of crime rates, which is a part of
the answers
Type your answers, including your calculation of crime rates of each year from 2006 to 2015 (be
sure 2012 is included) and a concluding statement of violent crime trend in Houston from 2006
to 2015. Create a line graph of the violent crime rates in Houston from 2006-2015 by using Excel
(if you don’t know how to it, watch the video by clicking the link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PwVWX28dEE). Copy and paste the line graph into your
word document as one file (if you don’t know how to it, watch the video by clicking the link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87N2ezHH75k). Submit your work to the instructor via the
Blackboard Messages by noon, Friday, September 16.
